WESSEX SUPPORTS CRUCIAL RNLI REFURBISHMENT
Wessex Galvanizers has played a part in the major restoration of a Swansea RNLI boat station. The plant partnered with Fareham-based Four Tees Engineering to provide its hot-dip galvanizing treatment to 81 tonnes of steel used in the refurbishment of the 116 year old Mumbles RNLI station. Due to the station being Grade II Listed, the restoration saw the plant galvanize fabricated steel beams used to reinforce the existing pillars, ensuring the pier offered a stable launch for the RNLI's bigger Tamar class boat, without compromising its original Victorian features. The development also saw the launch of a hotel, bespoke apartments and a visitor centre situated at the headland. Richard Whiddett, Commercial Manager of Wessex Galvanizers, explained: “The Mumbles Pier was a fantastic project to work on, and although I know a number of people installing the elements experienced challenges along the way due to the pier’s large tidal range, the finished pier has proved incredibly popular. The RNLI carry out some fantastic work and selflessly put themselves at risk to save others, so we’re pleased that the refurbishment of the pier and the increased revenue it will attract will continue to benefit local residents and visitors alike.” By Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd
