BLACK COUNTRY FIRMS DELIVER ON £MULTI-MILLION MIDDLE EASTERN WORK
A huge high-security project is making its way to the Middle East thanks to two Black Country firms. Edward Howell Galvanizers Ltd, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has been contracted by fencing specialist, Zaun Limited, to galvanize approx. 2,700 tonnes of steelwork, used to make high-security mesh fencing panels which are currently making their way to the Middle East. Zaun’s undisclosed seven-figure contract with the client spans four years and will see it complete the design, manufacture, quality control, and supply of 80 kilometres of high-security fencing systems standing at 8ft tall and consisting of over 33,000 individual panels, as well as accompanying posts and clamp bars – all of which are being hot-dip galvanized by the team at Edward Howell. “This contract involves a magnitude of work,” Adam Christie, Research and Development Manager at Zaun, explained. “We’ve almost doubled our workforce in the last three years, and the size of this job has enabled us to take on six more workers as well as invest in brand new equipment. We’ve taken one of our existing welded mesh fence designs and added extra wire to further improve the security of the panels, which also helps keep the panels flat without the need for rails or V-beam presses. “The customer had a clear expectation of what they required, but we’ve managed to work with them over time to make recommendations and changes throughout in order to enhance the quality and performance of the fencing. One of these specifications included the use of galvanizing as an additional method of ensuring any steelwork used on the project benefits from the highest level of security and long-term protection against corrosion, extreme temperatures and risk of damage. “The team at Edward Howell Galvanizers has certainly stepped up to the challenge, with much of the finished fencing already delivered from our site in Wolverhampton to the end destination in Kuwait.” The fencing panels are further secured with stainless steel razor coil topping, which are then bolted to galvanized steel posts, and attached to steel base plates by Zaun’s new robot welder, bought specifically for the task. Over 200 containers, each 40ft in length, are to be shipped throughout the duration of the four-year contract. Jim Lindsay, Sales Manager at Edward Howell Galvanizers, added: “This is an extremely comprehensive project and we’re thrilled to have been asked by Zaun to be involved. For high-security applications, the use of galvanizing compared with other finishes is a no-brainer, given its ability to cover steel inside and out with a molten-zinc coating that protects against the elements for many years to come, without the requirement for ongoing maintenance.” Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot-dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, the firm offers a truly national galvanizing service. For further information please contact Wedge Group Galvanizing on 01902 630311
