SCOTTISH GALVANIZERS LAND MAJOR CONTRACT

Scottish Galvanizers has played a pivotal role in the construction of a helipad at a new £multi-million hospital in Glasgow, which is the largest medical facility in Scotland. The plant has galvanised structural steel on behalf of Glengarnock-based J&D Pierce which has been used to create a helideck at the new £842 million Southern General Hospital. The project saw the firm galvanise steel that was used to construct the helipad and access ramps, and forms a central point for the new ‘super’ hospital which is the first facility in Scotland to have a landing pad on its roof, offering quicker and more direct access to the emergency department. The 14 storey facility is the location for one of four new trauma care units in Scotland, with the helipad enabling the hospital to admit air ambulance patients who require urgent emergency care. Paul Tait, Commercial Manager at Scottish Galvanizers, said: “It was a great privilege to be involved in the construction of the new Southern General Hospital which is a mammoth project not only for the region, but the country as a whole. Galvanising the helipad seemed an obvious choice for protection against rust and corrosion, as not only is the structure exposed to the elements, but it will be subjected to an aggressive marine environment, as it’s in close proximity to the River Clyde.” Martin O’Neil , Business Development Manager at J&D Pierce, explained: “It was paramount that the correct protective treatment for a long-life was applied and galvanizing was chosen by the design team as the optimum solution for long term protection and robustness during installation, to remove the need for follow up protective layers in what is a challenging location. “The operations had to be carefully planned to ensure the stability of the frame was maintained during stages of erection, and our close relationship with Scottish Galvanizers ensured that the fabricated components left the plant in good time and order.” By Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd
