Case Study: The ‘best small building in London’ gets two Stannah Xtralifts

With its remarkable period design, A-rated energy efficiency, and prime location, Suffolk St James has rightfully earned its title as the 'best small building in London.'

Originally constructed in the 1950s, this architecturally significant five-storey refurbishment now boasts 18,050 sq ft of boutique office space, conveniently situated within walking distance of St James’s Square, Piccadilly Circus, and Leicester Square.

The visionary architects at Stiff + Trevillion have transformed Suffolk St James into an impressive CAT A office refurbishment, aligning with net-zero carbon principles while prioritizing accessibility and occupier wellbeing.

Following the refurbishment, the building now boasts exceptional environmental performance, achieving an EPC A-rating and BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification.

Inclusive design is evident throughout the building, with step-free access to all areas provided by two Xtralifts from Stannah.

The Challenge:

The refurbishment of Suffolk St James aimed to create CAT-A offices on multiple floors, along with a striking ground floor reception and additional amenities on the lower ground level. The project's primary challenge was to replace the existing single 10-person lift and ensure step-free access to all five floors, including the roof terrace and lower ground floor.

The Solution:

Stannah proposed the installation of two 9-person Xtralifts, aligning with the constraints of the existing lift shaft space and minimizing the need for extensive building works. The Xtralifts, renowned for their energy efficiency and high performance, were tailored to meet the lift consultant's specifications and the architect's design vision.

The lifts were equipped with bespoke finishes, including full-depth architraves, bronze car landing doors, and timber panels, seamlessly integrating with the building's interior design. Additionally, the lifts feature energy-saving LED lighting, stand-by shutdown mode, and a regenerative motor, achieving an A-rating energy certification.

The Result:

The refurbishment of Suffolk St James successfully prioritized accessibility while meeting the stringent requirements of lift consultants and designers. The installation of the Xtralifts was completed with meticulous attention to detail, minimizing disruption to nearby businesses and residents.

The expertise of the Stannah team ensured a seamless installation process, with remote monitoring providing assurance of low maintenance and hassle-free operation.

Certified according to the Lifts Regulations 2016, the lifts at Suffolk St James epitomize excellence in design, functionality, and accessibility, further enhancing the building's reputation as a premier office development in London.
