OUTGASSING/ LABEL BUBBLING – WHY DOES IT HAPPEN

Outgassing is a phenomenon in which non-metallic materials like polymers, adhesives, rubber, or potting compounds/epoxies release gas when exposed to heat or a vacuum environment. These emitted gases can eventually condense on other surfaces, potentially leading to operational issues. This explanation comes from Samtec as our source.

The Challenge:

Within the manufacturing industry, there are instances where products require immediate labeling straight from the production line. These products are often composed of materials like plastics, acrylics, or polycarbonates. When labels are applied to these products while they are still hot, outgassing can occur almost instantly. Additionally, extended exposure to sunlight and other environmental factors can also lead to label bubbling.

In a specific case, our client encountered outgassing challenges with thousands of large, plastic-based products that needed labeling immediately upon exiting the production mold. Waiting for the products to cool down was not a viable option, and there was no guarantee that outgassing wouldn't occur after the products left the warehouse.

The Impact of Outgassing on Labels:

Outgassing significantly affected the integrity of the labels in this case. The heat caused volatile elements to escape from the plastic and migrate to the label's surface through the adhesive. So, what's the solution?

The Solution – Gas Permeable Labels:

The remedy lies in the use of gas-permeable labels, specially designed labels equipped with unique adhesives and material layers featuring tiny cavities that allow gases to escape without harming the label. These labels are particularly well-suited for industrial applications where outgassing is a persistent concern. When this type of label was applied to the same product within the same timeframe, it exhibited none of the outgassing-related issues.

In Conclusion:

Our gas-permeable labels effectively resolved a production challenge faced by a major production line and supplier. Labels may appear as minor components in the grand scheme of manufacturing, but when they malfunction, they can disrupt the entire process. Labeling is often left to the last minute or overlooked entirely in production planning. However, we aim to change this perception, emphasizing the critical role labels play in ensuring seamless operations.
