Electrical Safety – Do you have a killer appliance?

Every year many electrical products are recalled by manufacturers due to safety risks identified after the products have been on sale and are in daily use throughout the country. It is more common than people realise for things like fridges, washing machines and dishwashers plus small appliance like food mixers to be the subject of product recalls in the UK. Recently Bosch Siemens re-issued a product recall that was first put out in 2011, two years on and they are still not satisfied that all the potentially dangerous machines in domestic use have been identified and checked. It is estimated that just under half a million dangerous dishwashers are in use throughout the UK. The Electrical Safety Council has a new product checker on it’s website at www.esc.org.uk/recall which will help you find out if you have a potentially dangerous appliance that has been the subject of a recall. Be sure to check through, the dishwasher previously mentioned were manufactured between 1999 and 2005, so it doesn’t mean that just because your equipment is old that it is not worth checking! Make sure you are kept informed of product recalls by registering your products when you buy them, you know that little postcard that most of us put in the bin? With approximately 6,000 appliances catching fire due to manufacturing faults in 2010 – 2011 it is worth spending five minutes filling it in and sending it off for a little bit of peace of mind, some manufacturers now let you register your purchase online, which makes it even easier.
