WHAT DO WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO QUOTE?
A brief overview of the information we need to be able to provide a detailed quote for you We are often asked how much testing will cost and how long it will take, but we don't apply a 'one size fits all' approach and each quote is detailed and product specific, so we spend time talking to you to find out what is needed. In this latest article, we give some useful pointers on the information we need to be able to give a quote as smoothly and quickly as possible. 1. Do you need UKAS accredited testing? We have a comprehensive UKAS schedule, covering a vast range of standards. We have been UKAS accredited for over 15 years and we strive to continually update our schedule with the latest standards. Our UKAS accreditation shows that our processes and methods have been assessed and we are technically competent, with accurate and consistent test results. However, if you don't need your testing to be UKAS accredited, this can be accommodated. 2. Tell us about your product The more information you can provide, the quicker and easier it will be for us to send you a quote. We will ask you for the description, voltage, current, weight and dimensions, and if you have any drawings we like to see these too. 3. Where will you be selling your product? We will ask whether your item is to be sold in the UK and Europe only, or if it is for other countries around the world. At Cranage, we can offer a range of services to cover testing requirements for other countries, together with our subsidiary company Cranage Veritas. 4. Do you need a test report and/or a test certificate? These are not mandatory, and so the quote will change depending on your requirements. We can issue a full test report or a summary. The test certificate cannot be issued without a test report, and it will detail the standard that the item was tested to and which tests have been applied. Specific requirements for EMC testing If you require EMC testing, there is some additional information the specialist team at Cranage EMC and Safety will need to know in order to provide an accurate quote. 5. What is the emissions class? This is based on where the item is used, and can be either: A- for industrial, or B- for domestic/residential and light industrial. If you are unsure, we will test to class B 6. How many modes of operation does your item have? Think about how a product would be used in normal operation. In addition to this, the number of connection points needs to be detailed and the maximum cable length specified for the connection to each port type. It is important to know if it is shielded or unshielded too, this is critical in both the test approach and the outcome of the results. 7. What is the applied dwell time for RF immunity testing? This question can be difficult for those not familiar with EMC testing, but put simply it means how long does the equipment under test need to be subjected to each RF frequency to check if it is affected? This is usually 0.5 or 1 second. 8. What is the highest oscillator speed in the equipment? An oscillator can also be referred to as an IC (Integrated Circuit) or Processor, such as those embedded within a personal computer. The speed is usually quoted in MHz or GHz. 9. Does it contain a CRT monitor, or is it magnetically sensitive? These could include, but are not limited to: -Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors -Hall Effect Sensors, which by their nature responds to magnetic field by varying its output voltage -Magnetic Storage Devices. This is now considered old technology, but are still being used. When requesting a quote, it is helpful to us if you can provide any user guides, diagrams or label markings. It may seem like a lot of information, but the more you can give us, the faster we can provide a quote for testing. The team at Cranage EMC and Safety are always willing to discuss anything that you may not be sure of and we will support you through the process, as we recognise this is new to some of the manufacturers who contact us. When you request a quote from us, it will be worked on by the engineers who are often involved in the testing too and we are always available for feedback on projects. At Cranage EMC and Safety, we have extensive testing facilities and so we do not outsource testing to other companies. Get in touch with our friendly team to discuss your testing requirements
