Although design agencies are not the world’s worst polluters, they share a responsibility to do their bit for the planet; here at Brilliant, we take this issue seriously. Our environmental policy was originally conceived to outline the measures we take to regulate our internal consumption and waste; but it has quickly become clear that as a supplier of subcontracted services, our influence stretches beyond the confines of our studio. More and more clients are insisting that we use suppliers with Green credentials, and we are ready to respond; agencies that continue to ignore this demand will begin to lose business. Conversely, there are still some clients for whom going Green is not a priority, and it is our feeling that in these cases, Brilliant can go even further by convincing them that a sustainable approach is altogether more beneficial. However, the task is not easy, with public cynicism towards all things eco starting to grow: in 2007 the term ‘Green fatigue’ was coined in the UK media, hinting at the potential backlash in society to the barrage of Green moralism. So what is the best way to address Green issues, without putting some clients off? The answer is that sustainability has to become the norm, and should be seen as an all-round benefit not only to the planet, but also to the future of every business. Consideration for environmentally friendly practices needs to go hand in glove with all of the services we offer here at Brilliant. As designers, we often have to convince clients to buy creativity; by adopting the same commitment to sustainability, persuading clients on that front has become a natural part of our everyday practice.
