Variable speed compressors drive demand in foodservice refrigeration
Variable speed compressors are a significant driving force in the global commercial refrigeration equipment market for foodservice businesses, according to a report from Grand View Research. The analyst recently published new figures showing the growth in the global commercial refrigeration equipment market as a whole, as well as picking out some key highlights from specific areas and industries. Among them was the foodservice industry, which in 2015 accounted for around a third of global revenues, and is predicted to see significant growth throughout the forecast period, which reaches until 2024. Variable speed compressors are a key element in this growth, as part of newly developed cooling systems for the foodservice segment. Grand View Research explains: “Development of cascade refrigeration systems with variable speed compressors is expected to escalate the industry demand across the food and beverage industry.” Food in general accounts for four of the five segments used in the report to divide up the commercial refrigeration equipment market. They include foodservice along with food and beverage production, distribution and retail; the fifth segment is simply reserved for all other uses. By 2024, the combined market worldwide is predicted to reach $52.52 billion, with demand for modern more efficient refrigeration units that operate at appropriate humidity levels and with evenly distributed air temperature. “Commercial refrigeration equipment manufacturers invested considerably in R&D activities to develop advanced and innovative products,” the report states. The use of variable speed compressors is one example of such advances, offering more efficient operation thanks to the ability to ‘dial down’ the compressor output at times of low demand. In an application such as refrigeration – where the cooling system may only need to operate at full speed periodically – this has clear advantages, helping not only to keep the system at the desired temperature more consistently, but also delivering cost savings and a reduced environmental footprint at the same time
