300 bays of shelving with 32 free standing mobile bases ensures effective storage for renowned publishers archive. When DC Thompson Scotland’s largest privately owned publisher, decided to refurbish their Headquarters in Dundee, Dr Norman Watson called in Chief Archivist, Leena Mitford to take stock of records dating back 150 years. DC Thompson publishers of the perennial favourites Beano and Dandy, the People’s Friend and owners of the on-line social network Friends Reunited, produces more than 200 million comics, magazines, and newspapers every year, so this was going to be some task. Leena set to work and the archive was catalogued and boxed and ready to transfer to a former printing floor to create the DC Thompson Museum and Archive. The question now was what do you do with nearly 8,500 archive boxes and over 6,000 foolscap box files and how do you provide quick access to any file, newspaper or comic in the collection? Dr Watson identified six companies who could offer a solution and provided an outline design concept for initial quotation. Storwell Systems were one of three companies shortlisted and was successful with its MaxStor high density mobile storage system. After an in-depth site survey and technical review, Storwell Systems engineer’s designed a system incorporating 32 freestanding mobile bases with 300 bays of steel shelving to take the load. “We knew from their attention to detail at the initial quotation process that Storwell Systems would get it right first time and we were not disappointed. The system was delivered on time and installed within 4 days. It’s easy to use and thanks to Leena’s great work we now have an archive to be proud of.
