BBC and ITV confirm plans to launch BritBox streaming service in UK
UK broadcasters BBC and ITV have confirmed proposals for a new subscription streaming service in the UK called BritBox. They have agreed a joint vision for the service and are now working on a formal legal agreement. They expect other partners to join the service and will speak to regulators and the industry about the plans. They are aiming to launch the service in the second half of 2019 with "competitive" pricing. The service will provide a wide collection of British box sets and original series on-demand. The UK launch follows the success of their BritBox streaming service JV in North America, which has signed up over 500,000 subscribers since launch. The broadcasters see significant demand for such a service in their home market, where already over 12 million households have at least one subscription VOD service and the number is growing by 20 percent per year. Research commissioned by ITV shows that desire for British content is high, with 43 percent of all online homes interested in subscribing to a new SVOD service which features British content. This increases to over 50 percent in homes with a Netflix subscription.
