Driving Sustainable Healthcare Solutions

At Great Central Plastics, we've always been driven by a passion for sustainable plastic manufacturing. So when the opportunity arose to collaborate with Glasgow’s Heriot-Watt University on a pioneering project, we knew we had to seize it. Together, we embarked on a journey to revolutionise Lateral Flow Test (LFT) production.

Utilising injection moulding grade materials derived from "post-consumer" sources like Gum-tec from discarded chewing gum and HIPs from end-of-life fridge parts, we aimed to significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with these essential medical testing devices.

Working closely with Professor Maiwenn Kersaudy-Kerhoas and her team at Heriot-Watt University, using our knowledge and resources we were able to create prototypes that not only met but exceeded industry standards. The approval to test these prototypes was a pivotal moment, validating the feasibility and effectiveness of our sustainable approach to injection moulding.

Kiron Phillips (Business Development) encapsulates our ethos for sustainable practices: "We take pride in our sustainable manufacturing processes, championing alternatives like Gum-tec and Limex. This collaboration is a testament to our dedication to cutting-edge research and development."

Navigating the complex landscape of medical device manufacturing has its challenges. Regulatory hurdles and industry norms presented obstacles along the way. However, our collaboration with Heriot-Watt University has shown that recycled plastics can indeed meet these stringent requirements, paving the way for a more sustainable future in healthcare.

Looking ahead, we envision a world where recycled plastics become the norm in medical device manufacturing. Professor Kersaudy-Kerhoas shares our optimism: "Recycled plastics could be seamlessly integrated into existing equipment, offering a swift and impactful solution."

The recognition from national media outlets like the Independent and ITV reinforces the significance of our endeavour. Our recent appearance on Scottish television (above) further amplifies our message, spreading awareness about the importance of sustainable practices in healthcare.

We are excited to see how this development progresses and sharing more news in the upcoming months.
