Pipe Welding Unit Complete Challenging Job
In the beautiful, historic town of Tewkesbury a new development of 250 dwellings, detached, semi-detached houses and flats, is being constructed for Miller Homes. Situated in Breden Road, adjacent to the picturesque Tewksbury Marina and close to the river Severn, rainwater drainage – especially storm drainage - for the new estate was clearly a crucial factor at the planning stage. Asset International Ltd. of Newport was called in to design the site drainage and an attenuation system was agreed involving massive pipework in a ‘T’ formation with 1.5 metre diameter pipes on either side of a 2.4 metre pipe leading towards the river where gradual, controlled discharge would be made during and after storm conditions. Access to the system is via a 3 metre diameter manhole at the junction of the three attenuation pipes. The welding of the huge HDPE pipes manufactured by Weholite was obviously a major undertaking and for this Asset International called on GD Environmental Services, also based in Newport and a company whose varied services they had used before. Part of GD’s success has been due to heavy investment in advanced machinery, tools and vehicles, so it was no surprise to find them already equipped with Plastotherm Hand Extruder plastic welding equipment, made by Munsch, tools easily capable of the necessary welded seams on these large diameter pipes. Two of GD’s staff, experienced and fully trained for the work, completed the task in good order and even found time to admire the beautiful Tewksbury Abbey in between. Although GD’s mainstream business is in waste disposal and recycling, the company is always looking to establish specialist niche markets to serve clients.
