Established in the early 1960s as a subsidiary of Glasgow-based John Wallace Engineering Limited, the original Autoscan company initiated a business partnership with Bertello SpA of Cuneo, Italy, aiming to manufacture Automated Storage systems under license for the UK market.

In 1968, Mr. W.H. (Bill) Longley, then a manager at John Wallace Engineering, assumed ownership of Autoscan Limited, relocating its operational headquarters to London. Notably, during this period, an order was secured for a 30ft tall storage carousel destined for installation in Prince Philip’s office at Buckingham Palace. These office storage solutions, crafted to Bertello’s specifications in Glasgow, remain in use today.

Subsequently, the decision was made to import vertical storage systems directly from Italy, leading to a period of growth with new installations primarily in Government, Military, Insurance, and Banking sectors.

For approximately 25 years, the company operated with a single full-time engineer and occasional subcontracted assistance until Mr. Longley's passing in October 1993. Following his demise, Mr. N.A. Shelvey, Mr. Longley’s son-in-law, assumed leadership of the company. Over the ensuing years, the company experienced expansion in clientele, workforce, and revenue. In 1995, the operational base relocated to Nottingham, and distributorships were established with two additional European automated storage equipment manufacturers.

In 2005, the company entered into joint ownership of Storage and Construction Services Limited, specialists in industrial storage solutions. Subsequently, in February 2006, further expansion occurred with the acquisition of LHW Engineering Limited.
