Health and Safety Statistics 2012/13
The HSE published its annual health and safety statistics for 2012/13 on 31 October 2013.
There have been significant reductions in the number and rate of injury over the last 20 years or more. Nevertheless, construction remains a high risk industry. Although it accounts for only about 5% of the employees in Britain, it accounts for 27% of fatal injuries to employees and 10% of reported major injuries.
The key construction figures are:
Fatal injuries
There were 39 fatal injuries to workers in 2012/13 compared with 48 in 2011/12.
The main causes of fatal injuries in 2012/13 were:
falls (59%),
being hit by a moving vehicle (10%),
collapse/overturn (5%),
electricity (5%) and
being struck by a falling/moving object (3%).
Major injury
There were 1,913 reported major injuries to employees in 2012/13, compared to 2,124 in 2011/12 .
The main causes of major injury were:
falls (28%),
slips, trips and falls on the level (28%),
being struck by moving/falling objects (15%) and
handling (8%)
