CYBER CRIME – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Cybercrime is an unfortunate reality of the digital age and alarmingly, many business owners remain unaware of the potential threats posed. Recently, the media has reported a worrying number of cases involving cybercrime and it has become increasingly clear that all enterprises are at risk, regardless of size. We have compiled some information to help you understand cybercrime and the steps you can take to protect yourself from possible attacks. Cybercrime is a broad term and can include any of the following: Malware/Ransomware refers to malicious software such as Trojans and various other viruses. Trojans are inadvertently downloaded from phishing emails, ad banners and illegal websites. They are defined by the fact that they lie dormant until the user accesses their online banking account, potentially exposing themselves to the theft of their personal information, passwords and IP address. Modified Email is also known as CEO impersonation. Scam emails are sent to an organisation’s finance team with a request for payment. The requests are often strategically timed in order to make verification difficult. As the fraudulent party is hoping that the targeted recipient will not attempt to authenticate the identity of the sender they will often target junior members of staff. The emails typically request an urgent payment to be made to a third party or to the senior employee they are presenting themselves as. Vishing involves a telephone call from an individual claiming to be from your bank, law enforcement or a fraud detection agency. The intended purpose is to extract confidential information from you. Phishing involves contact via email. The sender impersonates well known organisations such as banks and attempts to dupe you into clicking on a link or attachment in order to access your passwords and personal information. Smishing is simply the fraudulent act of phishing through SMS communication. Once again, the aim is to trick the recipient into divulging personal details.
