FAQ's, Q&A's, It's' All Here

How do you break the hot/hard wax? Should you not have a hammer on hand, which can be used to gently tap and break the wax, then we suggest placing the wax brick into a plastic bag and knocking it on a hard surface. This will break the wax into smaller pieces, which can then be placed in your heater.

What is the difference between hot/hard and strip/soft? Strip Wax is designed to be used on larger areas, making use of a paper strip which adheres to the wax before removing it from the skin. Our strip waxes not only allow for a quicker more cost-effective waxing treatment, but they also remove hair as short as 1mm directly from the hair follicle - reducing the chance of ingrown hairs and irregular hair regrowth.

Hot Wax is designed to be used on smaller, more sensitive areas. With the application of pre-waxing oil and the correct application of the wax, any discomfort to the client can be reduced. Hot Wax does not require the use of paper strips -instead, the wax hardens allowing it to be removed directly from the skin.

Where can I use the film wax? Film Wax can be used on all areas including the larger areas. When correctly applied, the wax can be spread extremely thinly making it a very cost effective for clients who do not wish to use strip wax.

Where can I use the hot/hard wax? Hot Wax can be used on smaller, more sensitive areas - such as the face, underarms and genital area.

What should the consistency of the hot/hard and film be when applied? To maximise the best results when heating the wax place the wax in the heater and turn it on to a high heat setting. The wax will melt and become very runny; this is the correct consistency at this stage. Stir well and reduce the heat by turning the heater down to a moderate to low heat setting. This is now perfect for use. Test the wax on the inside of your wrist to make sure it is at a comfortable temperature.

When heated the wax should have the consistency of thick paint or honey. When loading your spatula, you should be able to turn it two or three times to have a good dollop on the top that doesn't run off if you stop twirling the spatula. If the wax drips while you twirl – it is too hot. If it creates threads when you turn the spatula, it is too cool.

Can the strip/soft wax container go directly in the warmer? Yes, our strip wax tubs are designed to be placed directly into a wax heater. The container is a special heat-resistant plastic that will not be damaged whilst heating.

Do I still need to use baby powder and/or corn-starch with your waxes? Although talc and corn-starch are known to remove excess moisture from the skin, we do not recommend the use of either these with our waxes. Harley Wax has specially formulated two Pre-Waxing products - a Cleanser and Toner - and our Pre-Waxing Oil.

The Cleanser/Toner will not only clean and sterilize the area, but it also removes any excess oil and moisture from the skin. This balances the skin’s PH to allow for a more effective treatment.

Our Pre-Wax Oil, applied with Hot and Film Wax, creates a lipid barrier between the wax and the skin. This further reduces any discomfort felt, while at the same time hydrating the skin prior to the treatment.

What temperature do I keep the warmer at? As heaters vary vastly on different temperature settings, we do not advise of a specific temperature.Instead, we prefer to advise on achieving the right consistency of wax. The wax should have the consistency of thick paint or honey.

What order do I use the Pre and Post Products? Our Cleanser/Toner is applied first when using of all our waxes:Hot, Strip and Film. Not only does this clean and sterilize the area being waxed. but it also balances the PH of the skin allowing for a more effective wax.

Our Pre-Waxing Oil is to be used after the Cleanser/Toner when using Hot or Film Wax. This oil creates a lipid barrier between the wax and the skin, allowing the wax to “shrink-wrap” the hairs and avoiding contact with the skin. Not only does this allow for less discomfort for the client, but it also hydrates the skin prior to the treatment.

Our After-Care Products, both our After-Care Oil and Aloe Gel, can be used after all waxing treatments to soothe the skin and assist in reducing any inflammation.

Do I use both the After Oil and Aloe Soothing Gel together? Although our Aloe Gel can be followed up with our After-Care Oil, we suggest opting for one or the other.

Harley Aloe Gel is best for clients with extra-sensitive skin or sensitive areas, as well as for clients that do not wish to have any oily residue left on their skin. The cooling and soothing properties of Aloe Vera makes the Harley Aloe Soothing Gel perfect for calming irritated skin after a wax treatment.

Harley After-Care Oil is preferable when using Strip Wax, as it not only hydrates the skin but also removes any wax residue left on the skin after the treatment. The anti-bacterial properties of Tea Tree combined with the calming properties of lavender will leave your skin feeling conditioned and silky smooth.

What wax do you recommend for sensitive skin? All of our Harley Waxes are designed to be used on sensitive skin, as our products are made with some of the highest-quality natural raw ingredients.

We do, however, advise that our waxes containing Titanium Dioxide are particularly good for extra sensitive skin. Titanium Dioxide not only allows for a more delicate removal process, but it is also known to reduce irritation and redness while at the same time promoting skin hydration.

Our waxes that contain Titanium Dioxide are as follows: Rose Hot Wax, Chocolate Hot Wax, Azulene Film Wax, Rose Strip Wax and Tea Tree Strip Wax.
