Insulate Britain
How to fix 30m draughty homes. I live in a brick built 1950s house in the Sheffield suburbs. I want to be a bit more eco-friendly and save some money on my heating bills. How easy is it to upgrade your traditional British home towards the highly efficient passivhaus standards and how much does it cost? The Economist reminds us that Britain’s homes are among the oldest and least efficient in Europe. After the cost of domestic energy tripled this year in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the government introduced a price cap for households that limits the average bill to no more than £3,000 a year until April 2024. This short-term fix to prices will cost the state about £40bn and, in part because the government is now partially footing household bills, it will soon launch a campaign advising how homes can save energy. Would you go ahead and take action if the payback time was 15 years?
