NNOVATIVE RESTAURANT DESIGN AT GLYNDEBOURNE OPERA CHOOSES ENCASEMENT COLUMN CASINGS

The spectacular refurbishment of the Middle & Over Wallop restaurant at the world renowned Glyndebourne Opera house, has chosen n-case column casings from Encasement as part of its innovative interior design created by Miller Bourne architects and Nigel Coates. As professor of architecture a the Royal College of Art and a recognised as one of the UK’s most original interior and product designers, Nigel Coates worked alongside Miller Bourne to transform the previously ‘barn-like’ restaurant, which had a capacity of 200 into a high quality ‘designed’ environment with seating for 343. The original restaurant also included two trees that acted as the only points of interest and as part of the reconfigured layout, Coates chose to multiply these focus points by creating a series of practical and decorative waiter stations, some of which would disguise the ugly structural columns. Incorporating six shelves and a base cupboard to store items such as crockery, cutlery and napkins, at the centre of each of the 16 waiter stations is a 300mm diameter n-case column casing, which not only provide a decorative core to the waiter station design, but also conceals the restaurant’s existing structural columns. Encasement’s Managing Director, Martin Taylor explained: “We have undertaken a wide range of column casing projects covering all types of interior and exterior structural columns, but this is one of the most interesting and creative uses of a column casing I have seen as it transforms the structural columns into a feature as part of the waiter station tower.” The n-case column casings and accessories were supplied to site within 3 days of receiving the order and incorporated a Ledrerex finish to enable onsite finishing to the architect’s specification to integrate with the restaurant’s design.
