Comms Spec was approached by the Royal Signals, British Army to supply their Army Alpine Skiing Championships event with two-way radio equipment. Having previously worked with the Army Sports Control Board we were recommended for this event as well. We have now been supplying radio comms for the Army Alpine Skiing Championships event from 2020 through to today. - Safety and Communication We have worked closely with Army Royal Signals to provide them with a two-way radio comms solution that would give a safety net during their annual skiing Championships. The race committee’s main priority was to have clear communication between the top and bottom of the course as well as the lift station control. This was to ensure smooth coordination in case of any accidents or injuries. - Radio Hire vs Purchase The client was initially considering purchasing radios however, it was quickly agreed that hiring was a better option considering the radios are in use for only 5 weeks per year, during the ski season. Not only did this cut costs for the event, but it also saved time as they didn’t have to worry about maintenance. Hiring provides more flexibility especially if the location of the event changes, as a new terrain will require different solutions. The client also doesn’t have to concern themselves with the servicing and management of the radios. - Two-Way Radio Equipment We were tasked with providing approximately 12 radios with spare batteries. We also supplied radio accessories including ear-piece headsets and speaker mics, belt clips and leather cases/ straps which were provided with no additional cost to the client. More importantly, we also sent an external antenna, which was connected to the base station. The antenna was simple to install as it screwed into the RX.DPLXR connector on the back of the repeater. - The Outcome Previously the client experienced poor quality radio comms, without a repeater which didn’t provide an adequate safety net. With our long-range two-way radio comms solutions in place, their event ran smoothly and, most importantly, the organisers had a good safety net to fall back on in case of any accidents. And here is a quote from the Secretary of the Royal Signals Alpine Skiing Committee about his experience with Comms-Spec during this event: “Thanks again for your support – I don’t think I said, but your radios were invaluable when controlling our training and racing lanes, enabling our coaches to safely coordinate the release of racers from bottom to top, especially when the start referee wasn’t able to see the whole course. They worked perfectly, were simple for our instructors to use when wearing winter sports gear (including gloves), and withstood the extreme winter mountain environment. It goes without saying that the customer service from start to finish has been superb, and we look forward to working with you again next season.”
