Rubber is an extremely versatile material with excellent sealing capabilities, however it is important to note that rubber can vary greatly in terms of performance and quality. For day to day general use, commercial rubber sheeting is used. It is the cheapest form of rubber sheet, available in many different thicknesses and can be supplied with a fabric "insertion" to improve tear strength for gaskets and strips and in most cases is reasonable for most areas of application but generally not excellent. Specification Rubber is made to exacting standards as outlined in BS1154, BS2751, BS2752, BS5400, BS921 etc. For example if a rubber must be of a consistent hardness roll after roll, year in year out then specification rubber is the only way to guarantee this as it is made to the exact same recipe each and every time.
