Barnstaple company recognised at major national manufacturing awards

+S Ltd, a Barnstaple manufacturer providing customised engineering support to naval and off-shore oil and gas customers, has gained recognition as one of the best manufacturing businesses in the country. The North Devon company was named runner-up in the Climate Change Opportunity category of the national EEF Future Manufacturing Awards for its success in creating a niche in the marine renewable energy market. J+S received the accolade at a special ceremony in London in acknowledgement of its achievements in winning new business in an emerging sector. The company has considerable technical expertise in sub-sea engineering projects and spotted an opportunity to use this knowledge to develop lower cost sub-sea high voltage connectivity. It was a move that led to significant orders, including involvement in wave and tidal energy sites situated off the Orkney Isles. David Jeffries, Managing Director of J+S Ltd commented: “We are delighted that our hard work in diversifying our business has been recognised in this way and even happier that it is bringing about significant benefits for the company. “Our business roots are firmly established in the naval defence equipment support markets. Over the last few years we have been building a complementary business in supporting subsea assets for the North Sea Oil and Gas marketplace. “Two years ago we decided to enter the Marine Renewables market and identified the need to develop an affordable high voltage subsea electrical and optical connection system. After a long and complex development and qualification cycle over nearly two years, our solution is now fully qualified installed and operational at the EMEC sites in the Orkneys. We believe this product has the potential to be the market leader for wave and tidal sites around the world.” The annual awards are hosted by EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, and recognise excellence in enterprise, innovation, environmental performance and skills development among UK manufacturers. .
