Pole mounted equipment such as CCTV cameras, lighting, solar panels and antennae, often attracts unwanted attention from thieves and vandals. Some foolhardy individuals risk serious injury by climbing supporting posts and poles to steal or tamper with equipment, often causing significant damage in the process. In this blog post we look at how and why you need to protect your pole mounted equipment and deter anyone from attempting to climb your support posts and poles.
Why Posts Need Anti Climb Protection
Property theft is amongst the most commonly committed crimes and the easiest property to steal is whatever is left outdoors. Criminals are always on the lookout for easy targets and pole mounted equipment can be irresistibly attractive.
Pole mounted solar lighting is just one example of valuable exterior equipment that will attract the attention of thieves who know that these systems can be easily sold on. Similarly, CCTV security camera systems are often targeted by thieves who either want to steal the cameras or disable them so they can proceed with their break-in without being recorded. Poles and posts can also be used by criminals to gain access to a property they intend to burgle.
In one recent case a criminal was recorded scaling a post to reach a security camera, which he smashed to disable it. Unfortunately for him, the security camera was networked to a computer system which recorded the crime in progress enabling the police to be immediately alerted, resulting in his apprehension.
The cost impact caused by either theft or damage of pole mounted equipment can be extremely high. Its also important to be aware of the possibility that anyone climbing a pole or post might fall and injure themselves. While we may not have too much sympathy for criminals engaged in nefarious exploits, poles and posts can often attract children who might simply be challenging themselves or one another to see who can climb the highest.
Anti Climb Collars Deter and Protect
It should be clear that people need to be deterred from even attempting to climb posts and poles. And pole mounted equipment needs to be reliably protected from those who aren’t deterred.
Anti climb post collars provide both a highly visible deterrent and effective anti climb barrier. The spiked collars make it clear that gaining access to whatever is mounted on the top of the pole will not be easy and attempting to do so is likely to result in injury.

Posts, Poles and Pipes
As noted, there are many forms of pole mounted equipment commonly used today. Street lights, flood lights and home lighting systems are amongst the most common. These days pole mounted solar panels are also commonly used to power a variety of systems. CCTV security camera mounting posts are also becoming increasingly ubiquitous along with mobile telephone repeaters, antennae and network boosters.
The posts and poles used by these systems vary in size and design which therefore requires a variety of anti climb post collars. Some are designed for circular posts of various diameters while others are designed for square profile support posts.
Downpipes and drain pipes also benefit from highly visible spiked pipe collars. Burglars will often use exterior pipework to gain access to open upper storey windows or rooftops but if they see the pipework is protected with these spiked collars they will seek easier targets.

Anti Climb Collar Installation
Anti climb spiked collars provide instant protection. Installation can be achieved by anyone with basic DIY skills and a few basic tools. But its important to note that spiked anti climb collars should be handled with a great deal of care to avoid injury.
Anti climb collars should never be installed lower than a height of 2.4 metres (8 feet) and it should always be ensured they present no danger to passers by. Its recommended that wherever anti climb spikes are installed appropriate warning signage is prominently displayed and this may be a legal requirement in some locations.
Anti climb post collars are often used in conjunction with anti climb paint to provide rigorous anti climb protection.
