Space Tech Expo
Interconnect solutions out-of-this-world Launchers, telecommunication satellites, earth observation satellites, manned and unmanned flights, rovers, the list of applications for which Axon’ Cable can provide interconnect solutions is extensive - but all have a common goal: the need for miniature and reliable components. Space tech expo in Bremen represents an excellent opportunity for Axon’ Cable to present its expertise to the space market. Satellite cabling, data transmission, power distribution, weight and space saving, resistance to severe environments, come and discover the custom designed solutions showcased by Axon’ on stand E20/Hall 5. Flight expertise: to infinity and beyond! Involved in numerous space projects in orbit and beyond for 25 years, Axon’ Cable has a wealth of experience in designing and manufacturing interconnect solutions able to withstand the stresses of launch and the harsh space environment. The adventure started with communication bus harnesses to the MIL-STD-1553 standard provided for the Ariane 5 launcher, rapidly followed by other missions including ISS, Mars Rovers, LEO and GEO satellites, thrusters, space research and experimental equipment. The scope of products and services offered by the company includes ESA wires, high data rate assemblies, microwave coaxial assemblies, interconnect solutions, miniature connectors and engineering services. Satellite wiring The company, able to carry out complete cabling of satellites or missions, has gained considerable expertise with projects including Proba-V, various Sentinels, Alphasat, ExoMars, solar Orbiter, and many more. Axon’ offers a complete service from the choice of material or components, to the design, routing, manufacturing, test and qualification of the products. 2D or 3D cabling boards can be developed to ensure perfect integration at customers’ facilities. Axon’ can also design the harness while working directly on a real scale mock-up provided by the customer. The company is equipped with ISO 7 and ISO 8 clean rooms with very stable temperature and humidity control and Axon’ has experience in working with planetary protection and bioburden requirements. Bus bars: powerful but lightweight In order to highlight its expertise in the design and manufacture of Wattsys® bus bars for satellites, Axon’ will showcase a mock up with different interconnections. This technology based on flat sections of aluminium enables the carrying of very high currents within the challenging space environment. The bar can be connected via many kinds of connectors and wires with different gauge sizes. The flat configuration of the bus bars allows for mass reduction compared to traditional copper solutions, improved heat dissipation and significant improvement in voltage drop. The materials used have been selected to withstand extreme temperatures (-35°C to +150°C) and even cosmic radiation. Space saving and fast installation Axon’ Cable engineers design interconnects which meet challenging requirements including space saving, resistance to vibration and shocks. This is the case of micro-D connectors designed and manufactured by Axon’ Cable. In the heart of these miniature and highly reliable products: male micro-D contacts made up of 10 strands of copper alloy compressed during insertion into the female contact. Therefore a high number of electrical contact points is permanently assured. The spacing between each contact inserted into the connector is 1.27 mm, i.e. twice as compact as D-Sub connectors. The company has also developed a quick and easy connection system (D-Click) which requires no tooling: the time saving during installation is clear.
