Axon' cables in orbit

On 22nd November 2013, three identical satellites from the SWARM mission were released into orbit by the Rokot launcher which took off from the Russian space port in Plesetsk, north of Moscow. Objective: to study Earth’s magnetic field. Axon’ interconnects made with miniature Micro-D connectors equip the satellites, as well as bus links designed to transmit data. Low magnetic components SWARM is a challenging mission as the satellite’s own magnetic field must not have any influence upon the measurements. Terminated with miniature micro-D connectors and made with cables designed for space applications, Axon’ interconnects have been chosen for their low residual magnetism. In addition, Mil-Std-1553 bus harnesses also manufactured by Axon’ transmit the data between the different electronic devices of the satellite. A very detailed study Although invisible, the magnetic field plays a vital role for all of Earth’s inhabitants. This shield protects us from sun and space particles and cosmic radiation. Without the earth’s magnetic field, life would not be possible. In order to better understand how the magnetic field works and varies, three satellites manufactured by Astrium for the European Space Agency will take measurements over a 4 year duration from different orbits in order to draw a map of the magnetic field. This will be the most accurate study ever made.
