Axon’ Cable : The Ariane heritage
The Ariane launcher took off on 22nd March 2014 from the Kourou space centre to release into orbit two communication satellites including ASTRA5B. This is Ariane’s 59th successful launch. The spacecraft is equipped with Axon’ links designed to transmit both power and data. A real nervous system, the network of Axon’ cables transmit information from the launcher’s brain to all the on board systems. This is the only system which gathers together so many functions in the launcher. An essential role Data transmission cables manufactured by Axon’ have an essential role for the Ariane 5 launcher. Ranging through from communication to the flight command or electrical power systems, all commands pass through these links. It is therefore essential that they are extremely reliable as they have to resist very severe mechanical and thermal operating conditions. Rigorous manufacturing processes are to be strictly respected as the flight could be in danger if any command is badly transmitted. And a further challenge: the available space to cable the links within the launcher is very limited. Axon’ interconnects have therefore been designed to save both weight and space. A long–term collaboration « Airbus Defence and Space has coordinated the industrial supply chain for the Ariane 5 Programme since 2003. The total supply chain numbers over 550 companies (including 20 % of small and medium sized companies) » cites Airbus in a press release. For Axon’, the adventure started back in the 1990’s following the successful response to a tender from the Aerospatial company. A common development has given birth to data transmission interconnects which have cabled every Ariane launcher since. Remember that Ariane 5 has been designed to launch heavy payloads into space. About Axon’ Cable In addition to data transmission products for Ariane 5, Axon’ equips many satellites worldwide as well as the Curiosity Rover which is currently exploring Mars. Equipped with several dedicated clean rooms, the Axon’ group is very well versed in the requirements and challenges of space applications: weight saving, miniaturization, and materials designed for severe environments. The headquarters of the company is situated in Montmirail in France (100 km east of Paris) and employs around 1700 staff world-wide in 12 subsidiaries across Europe, America and Asia. The Group turnover amounts to some €116 million euro (2013), almost 70 % of which is export.
