Water Damaged Tapes Recovery

The pollutants or contaminants within any water will coat the tape, this will almost certainly result in a read failure as the contaminants cause the tape to be separated from the read heads. With water damage there could be a lot of liquid still within the casing. If this is permitted to leak into a drive then there will be an electrical failure and you will be left with a drive in an inoperative state. Worse, in the act of failing the tape could be left loaded within the drives internal mechanics so that any attempt to remove the tape could result in damage.
