EACH WATER TANK PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN MAINTAINING SUPPLIES

At Nationwide Water Solutions we understand the important role that a safe, stable supply plays. We strive to help clients in the UK retain their supplies when they are fed by a water tank, offering a myriad of invaluable services. On top of this we offer advice about caring for the tanks, including the importance of maintenance. A recent story we saw reinforces just how important water supplies are. It was an exploration of the current situation in Sri Lanka and how the island country struggles for water. Climate change is causing big problems for the population, resulting in droughts and flooding. Both of these are very bad for water resources and agricultural activities. In the past though, Sri Lanka had a very good water supply. It involved a complex network of canals, approximately 15,000 water tanks, and reservoirs, effectively transporting and storing resources. This resulted in fertile lands as water was available to cultivate crops and it supported the ecosystem. Sadly the network has been damaged by years of conflicts in the country as well as natural disasters such as floods. This has left many communities struggling with a lack of resources. A project to repair a number of the water tanks has been suggested as a way to help the situation, helping to make communities and the country itself more resilient against climate change. The Green Climate Fund has offered a £30million grant to help with this. The United Nations Development Programme is helping with it too. Many of the projects will see a change in the water tank design. The idea is to ensure it reflects the needs of the growing population. As part of this some will see their capacity increase, including the amount of “dead storage”. This is water that cannot be removed from tanks without being pumped out. It can be used to replenish wells and other sources. The water tank project in Sri Lanka will help to provide sustainable supplies that are protected from the damages and disruption that can be caused by flooding. The new water collection and storage strategy could provide major benefits once it is completed.
