How a Flood Pump Can Help Protect from the Dangers of Flooding

Flooding devastates local communities. Flooding can cause long term financial and health complications. In recent weeks, the United Kingdom has been hit by multiple floods, most impacting local communities and displacing residents who have lived there for years.

A flood pump could be the solution to reduce the impact of severe weather. Flood pumps work by pumping the water from a flooded area into a tanker or a drain. To find out more information about flood pumps and how to prepare for floods, carry on reading.

How to Prepare for a Flood The preparation for a flood should start today. This means that in the event of a flood, you are prepared and are more likely to keep yourself safe. It is advisable to prepare a flood survival kit to ensure you have what you need during the flood.

Flood preparation kits should include waterproof document storage, first aid kit, and a radio, torch and spare batteries. Once this kit has been put together, it should be stored upstairs or in a secure place. You should also consider moving valuables to a safe location. Examples include photo albums, electrical equipment, and furniture.

The Environment Agency’s Flood Warning service will alert you to the risk of flooding in your area. This is a valuable tool which allows you to step up your flood preparation. Another key step is to know how to turn off gas, electricity and water mains supplies. This will help reduce the damage caused and make the flood repairs cheaper.

Flood Levels There are three core flood categories in the United Kingdom, as set by The Environment Agency. Each of these have different levels of severity, each with different responses.

The first is a flood alert which means that flooding is possible, and you should prepare for a flood. You should prepare a flood kit of essential items and monitor water levels on The Environment Agency’s website.

The second is a flood warning which means flooding is expected and immediate action is required. At this stage, you should keep a flood kit ready and move valuables to a safe space. Another key step at this stage is to secure the property by turning off gas, electricity and water supplies.

The third is a severe flood warning which means that the flooding is expected to cause a danger to life. If you end up in this situation, you should stay in a safe place with an escape route you are comfortable with. This is the most serious of warnings, and so you should also be ready to co-operate with the emergency services and evacuate your home.

The type of flood pump you choose will depend on the warning issued. For example, for a flood warning alert, a 60 Litre Macerator Pump would be a suitable option. If the flood warning is severe, the Tardis Molex pump trailer is the best flood pump solution.

Temporary Flood Protection

If you need temporary flood protection for your home or business, there are a few key options you should consider before calling in more serious equipment like a flood pump. The Environment Agency has a leaflet on their website with further information on temporary flood protection methods.

One protection method is flood boards which attach to doors and windows. This method has the benefit of being able to be stored and used again after the flood has passed. It is important to remove the flood boards as soon as possible after the flood has passed to allow the building to dry out.

Another protection method is the sandbag. Sandbags are often provided by local councils as a method of temporary flood protection when the flood warning is less severe. Sandbags are at their most effective when plastic covers are used on the side of the water, closing all possible gaps.
