When ammonia is heated to nitriding temperature of around 500 degrees centigrade it dissociates into its components of hydrogen and nitrogen if a catalyst is present. In nitriding steel is the catalyst.
In simple terms the result is a nitrogen rich layer at the surface of steel which can be, dependant on the material treated, up to 1000 Hv.
One of the great advantages that nitriding has over most other forms of case hardening is the minimum amount, and in some instances, total lack of distortion that is produced by this low temperature treatment.
In common with conventional carburizing treatments, nitrided components can have any areas not requiring treatment masked off. This is available for all treatment listed below.
