Mobile Artwork Storage System – accessible, flexible and secure. The continued success of iconic British designer Paul Smith is underlined in the opening of over 48 bespoke shops throughout the world in addition to his flagship stores in London, Paris, Milan, New York, Seoul, and Tokyo. Paul Smith adds his personal stamp to each shop by assisting in the design of the individual interiors, drawing on his influences from sport, history, art, and pop-culture or modern architecture. Each theme is reflected by displays of art work from Paul Smith’s personal art collection, giving each shop the unique Paul Smith character and perspective. With a growing collection, selecting the right art work to compliment each shop design presents Jamie Field and his team of interior designers with quite a challenge. Like most art collections, if the picture is not hung in a gallery, they are randomly stacked one against the other in rows on the floor or traditional fixed racking with the disadvantage that you need to tip forward other artworks to view each one, with the possibility that the pictures or frames may get damaged. With new stores being designed and other stores regularly rotating their art work it became increasingly difficult to store, view, select and keep track of the collection. This was the challenge Storwell Systems was set - “How can we store all the artwork safely at the same time as being able to access any piece and quickly view everything in the collection for ideas?” After reviewing the collection and understanding the problems faced by James and his team, Storwell Systems designed a combination of flexible pull-out art racking and mobile shelving systems to accommodate the diverse shapes and frame sizes of the art collection and to give the greatest capacity to store pictures, whilst ensuring easy access to the entire collection. The high density nature of Storwell Systems picture racking ensures that artwork can be stored efficiently, without stacking or touching and yet can be accessed easily and viewed in position. “For the first time, our designers can effortlessly move each panel to gain quick access and view the whole collection to select the artwork to compliment the theme of the shop.
