Rugs and carpet can really influence the interior design of your property through use of colour, texture and style. For homeowners/landlords alike, it is only natural for you to want to keep your rugs in the best condition for as long as possible.
Is the fabric of your rug fit for purpose?
Choosing the right material for your rug You need to make sure that the fabric of your rug is fit for purpose depending on where the rug will be placed, and what the potential hazards are in that part of your home. For example, if it’s going to be in a kitchen it is likely to be at high risk of spills and stains. Ensure that you plan ahead and research into different materials to help you choose the right rug for your home.
Russdales - Hard floor underlay
Anti-slip underlays help prevent your rug from wearing out.
Consider an anti-slip underlay
Using an anti-slip underlay increases the level of friction between the rug and the floor, and therefore prevents the rug from slipping and becoming worn out. It is proven to extend the life of any rug as it offers an excellent level of grip on hard floors. Furthermore, an anti-slip allows air to circulate and enhances comfort underfoot.

Russdales - vacuuming your rug
Regularly cleaning your rug ensures that spills or mud won’t leave behind any marks.
Remember to clean your rugs regularly
Regular cleaning will dramatically improve the longevity of your rug. Immediately cleaning spills or mud will help prevent stains; but be cautious with harsh chemicals like bleaches, as this can lead to premature wear. Ideally, you should have your rug professionally cleaned once every two years, and in the meantime it is important to vacuum clean your rug regularly, especially in high traffic areas, to prolong the life of the rug.
Remember to wear shoes outside only
The main cause of rug wear and tear is being walked on with shoes. If you avoid wearing shoes inside, this will inevitably prolong the life of your rug as this will stop you from accidentally bringing dirt inside which then gets trapped in the rug fibres. In certain areas of the home, shoes are unavoidable, and in these places a more durable fabric and weave will really help. In the rest of the home, try wearing slippers or socks instead and encourage any guests to do the same.
