7 reasons why you should wear safety boots at work

7 reasons why you should wear safety boots at work
10/02/2022
  1. Protect the sole Safety boots or safety shoes can keep the sole of your foot protected from hazards on the ground. This could be nails and other sharp objects, particular chemicals or general hard flooring. Safety boots have extra thick or reinforced soles that create a barrier between you, the wearer and the potentially hazardous ground.

  2. Falling objects Whilst working in busy environments, such as factories or construction sites, the risk of falling objects increases by threefold. The objects at hand are also much more likely to cause significant damage if contact is made. Protect your feet with a steel caped safety boot.

In the past these types of boot have tended to feel ridged and uncomfortable, however, thanks to a fantastic team of designers that bulkiness has been eradicated. BASE even have a range of shoes that you would never guess had a steel toecap, so you can stay safe whilst staying true to your style.

  1. ESD technology Some workplaces, such as garages and mechanic workshops, put employees more at risk from electric shocks. The static charges in these rooms can seriously harm or be fatal. Finding a suitable safety boot that dissipates this electrostatic is therefore of uttermost importance.

Luckily thanks to modern technological advancement and innovative designs ESD shoes are available. If the wearer of these shoes walks on or brushes past a static object, the charge is quickly diverted by the boot. With the ESD safety shoes you can rest assured that you’re protected.

  1. Weather If you work outside, you know that you need a decent pair of safety boots. No matter if it is cold and wet, or warm and dry the right shoe is essential. No-one wants a soggy sock, whether it’s thanks to the rain or a sweaty foot! So having a few options of safety boots for outside work is a good idea.

Think about choosing a pair specific for waterproofing, one for warmth and another that helps with airflow and coolness. This way you’ll be prepared whatever the weather!

  1. Law Arguably the point that should be top of the list is the law concerning safety footwear at work. An update on The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 is being made this April (2022). To what extend this will affect current laws is not yet known, however it can be assumed that tighter regulations on PPE will be put in place. This will in turn affect the types of safety footwear that are permitted in particular workplaces. As it stands safety footwear as PPE is only required in the UK when there is a real risk of injury. This was probably the case due to the level of discomfort that could be caused by traditional safety boots/shoes. Today, the safety boots that can be purchased are as comfortable, if not more comfortable than regular shoes! Check out our range of safety footwear to see for yourself.

  2. It’s all in the STATS HSE has released their yearly report of health and safety statistics for the UK. It shows us that the number of accidents at work has been decreasing. The most common area for injury is slips trips or falls making up 33% of the overall accident report.

Our range of BASE safety boots have exceptional grip in addition to extra ankle support in many of the models. Choosing a shoe with this feature gives you an extra safety mechanism to reduce slipping and more opportunity to gain control if a slip does occur.

  1. Who should wear safety boots? Yes, we said seven reasons… But this point is just as important! As mentioned above, the law does not currently enforce the wearing of safety boots at all times. However, boots like our BASE range are so comfortable, stylish and protective that you won’t want to take them off!

If you find your job role in the below list, we recommend that you look into getting a pair of your own safety boots.

  • Electricians
  • Mechanics
  • Factory workers
  • Warehouse operatives
  • Long-haul drivers (for loading/unloading)
  • Plumbers
  • Construction workers
  • Engineers
