DANOBAT-OVERBECK organise some open days to present their new precision grinding solution

Maximum flexibility for internal and face grinding

Increasing productivity and process efficiency, reducing the space taken up in the plant and ensuring the quality of the finish of the parts made by manufacturers of transmissions, tools, dies and punches, among others, were the expectations for the new Overbeck IG 400 in the demanding internal grinding sector. Last month the Danobat facilities in Elgoibar opened their doors to a large group of manufacturers to show that objectives can be met with this specific machine architecture.

The grinding solution

The Overbeck IG 400 grinder maintains the specific architecture of the Danobat 171, a hydraulic internal and face grinding machine. However, there has been a qualitative leap in terms of flexibility and process control. Both combine easy handling with precision, but the IG 400 offers the possibility of linking together and combining different operations co-ordinated by the numerical control. The IG 400 grinds shapes and also has up to 4 work stations, combining internal and face grinding wheels and measuring equipment.

The main benefits provided by the IG 400 for these manufacturers is the capability is to carry out all the internal and face grinding operations on their parts in just one setting, regardless of the size of the batch. The different configurations (number of wheels, dressing systems and measuring systems) and the different degrees of automation possible make this machine an efficient precision option for manufacturing both single parts and large batches.

Stability and precision

The IG 400 model is a machine designed for precision internal and face grinding and has an architecture of independent slides on the X and Z axes. These movements, autonomous and/or co-ordinated, controlled at all times by the numerical control, provide the machine with a high level of precision.

The traverse (X) and longitudinal (Z) axes, with a travel of 400 and 380 mm respectively, are driven by means of ball-screws on a linear runner guiding system.

The slides are mounted on a bed of natural granite, which gives the unit static and dynamic rigidity, as well as excellent thermal stability. The adoption of this solution for the structure of this machine (and the whole range of Overbeck GmbH machines) provides quality assurance, backed by years of experience in the specific internal grinding sector.

Productivity and flexibility

During the conceptual definition phase for the IG 400 machine, the production requirements of different types of manufacturers from different sectors were taken into account. This study came to the conclusion that it was necessary to configure “different” grinding capabilities in a single machine.

By allowing the selection of the number and type of grinding wheels, dressing system and measuring systems, most of the manufacturers consulted after the demonstration said that they thought they could manufacture their orders more efficiently than with their current solutions.

The grinding wheelhead options for the Overbeck machine range from a single internal grinding spindle, 1 internal grinding spindle and another face grinding one in parallel (configuration of the machine on display in the showroom), to a 3-position turret in which internal grinding and face grinding spindles, and post-process measuring devices can be combined.

There are 2 options for the dressing system, depending on what material the grinding wheel is made from. The first option is to use an arm with three diamond tips (it allows the internal grinding wheel to be dressed on both sides and the facing wheel to be dressed as well) for conventional grinding wheels.
