Mach Engineering (TM of Good Directions Ltd) manufacturing parts for new Aston Martin powerboat
19/12/2016

Aston Martin’s first powerboat has taken to the waves. In scenes resembling the opening credits of a James Bond film, Aston Martin unveiled the 37ft AM37 powerboat against the glamorous backdrop of the Monaco yacht show.

Capable of racing across the waves at 50 knots, the boat was designed by “master craftsmen” who also worked on Aston Martin’s DB11 and Vulcan models. True to Aston Martin's heritage it was built at a shipyard in Southampton, with nautical engineering expertise from the Dutch yacht-builder Quintessence Yachts.

Quintessence Yachts first approached Mach Engineering over a year ago with regards to manufacturing bespoke hinges to be used on the boats unique sliding deck. The deck consists of three carbon panels which can be operated electronically, folding under the aft deck to uncover the cockpit. Once the cockpit is open, the aft deck slides back to allow for boarding or better use of the extending swim platform, with its teak floor and integrated ladder. The deck can also be tilted up to give access to the engine room, storage compartments and the carbon fibre bimini top.

The hinges therefore were required to be precision engineered to their specifications, incredibly strong and of a high quality expected of the Aston Martin brand. Alan Gingell, MD of Good Directions Ltd, (of which Mach Engineering is a trade mark) says: “we are very proud that we were chosen for this prestigious project. We enjoyed working closely with Quintessence Yachts to perfect the hinges for the prototype of the AM37 and look forward to our continued relationship as the speedboats go into production.”
