In 1826, the world’s first train station opened in Heighington, marking the beginning of transport evolution. That same year, the first passenger trains became fully operational, powered by steam. These early engines transformed society, enabling people and goods to travel further and faster than ever before. The railway networks that reshaped the United Kingdom’s economy, opening the door to industrial growth and national connectivity.
Fast forward 200 years, and the UK is undergoing another transformational shift. This time toward a sustainable, low-carbon future. Just as steam locomotives once defined progress, today it is renewable energy and eco-friendly transport leading the way. Petrol and diesel vehicles once dominated our roads, but now electric cars, buses, and taxis are driving change, reducing emissions across the country and supporting the UK’s net-zero ambitions. In 2024, the UK became the largest market for electric vehicles (EVs) in Europe, with sales growth of 21.4% over 2023.
The symbolism of this evolution is especially meaningful for us. The world’s oldest train station sits in Heighington, just a stone’s throw away from Go Geothermal’s headquarters in Newton Aycliffe. Remarkably, it is double the age of our parent company, CTC who last year celebrated 100 years of the company, proof of how much innovation can be achieved in two centuries.
From the first puff of steam in 1826 to today’s clean, carbon-free travel, the UK has always been at the forefront of progress. At Go Geothermal, we’re proud to play our part in the next chapter, helping households and businesses transition to renewable energy technologies which will power the next 200 years and generations beyond.
