Family Care Unit, Burnley Hospital, Lancs

Burnley Hospital have had major roofing problems with old building stock. The old bitumen felt roofs on the Family Care Unit had very little thermal value and large areas of blistered and split asphalt, allowing water in to the building, flooding patient wards and damaging expensive, sensitive equipment. Gables carried out a survey of the roof areas, took core samples and offered a warm roof overlay solution to bring the roof up to current building regulations. The building had to remain occupied throughout the contract. Stone chippings were removed at weekends and works were programmed around patient care, in particular, the replacement of the roof lights with new triple skin units. Gables installed 120mm PIR insulation over the prepared roof deck and a new carrier membrane before applying the Tor Coatings Elastaseal 20 system. All works were completed on time and within budget without any patient disruption.
