The Best Electric Family Cars 2021
29/01/2022

The best electric cars are simply good cars that just happen to be powered by a battery pack and an electric motor. The electric car is not just for a business user anymore looking for a better way to reduce their Benefit In Kind. The drastic improvement of battery ranges, vehicles available and the infrastructure has made everyone believe that now more than ever electric cars are a real contender, no matter what the lifestyle. So, if you’re looking at electric alternatives for the next family wagon here are some of our favourites we think should be on your shortlist…

Volkswagen ID.4

The Volkswagen ID.4 is the brand’s first pure electric SUV and follows hot on the heels of the ID.3 electric hatchback. A single battery charge has a WLTP range of 322 miles of the 204PS (150kW) 77kWh battery Pro Performance, so it’s no problem if you are looking to drive to the office in the morning, take the children to school before hand and then drive home in the evening. Skoda Enyaq IV

Skoda’s first all-electric 5 door SUV with a stylish and confident exterior design is now available to order. Not only does it have a battery size offering a WLTP combined range of 331 miles, it also has the same huge interior space and an even bigger boot than the Volkswagen ID.4 making the Skoda Enyaq IV a real competitor. Hyundai IONIQ 5

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is much bigger than the Kona and as a large electric car it’s a direct rival to the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Skoda Enyaq, Tesla Model 3 and Volkswagen ID.4. In fact it’s so much bigger that the 3m distance between the front and rear axles is the same you would find on an Audi A8 limousine. Hyundai have really stripped away the complexity in their design both inside and out on the IONIQ 5 using clean lines and minimalistic structures and with two different battery sizes it offers a choice of electric ranges from 238 to 298 miles. Nissan Leaf

The original mass-produced consumer electric car. With its 168—239 mile official range (dependant on model selected), the Nissan Leaf offers a no-nonsense and affordable way to go electric. It comes based on Nissan’s already extensive experience of building and selling EVs which should also give you confidence that you’re not inadvertently playing a part in ‘live’ R&D of unproven technology. Priced well within the Government grant threshold that money off makes a significant difference to the cost, and monthly deals make it an affordable finance option, too. Volvo XC40 Recharge

Volvo certainly has the formula for cars that can carry off premium image without appearing too pushy or pretentious. The XC40 is a stylish crossover with space enough for a small family and the choice of petrol, hybrid or fully electric powertrains. The XC60 Recharge is powered by Volvo’s latest generation of plug-in hybrid powertrain. Delivering high power output and longer electric range of up to 259 miles, this dynamic midsize SUV optimises pure electric freedom and further reduces tailpipe emissions. Vauxhall Mokka-e

The new Mokka-e features Vauxhalls confident new design language and sense of style rarely seen before in the brand’s history. Shared foundations with Citroën and Peugeot mean the Mokka benefits from these brands’ existing electrified platforms and the battery version looks good, has more than enough range and performance to satisfy most domestic needs and is usefully affordable too. An encouraging return to form and, along with the related Corsa-e, a strong start for Vauxhall’s move into the electrified era.
