Refrigerant Gas R22
The Montreal Protocol agreed that some refrigerant gases including CFCs and HCFCs (e.g., R12, R502, R22) were ozone depleting and as such should be phased out globally to help reduce global warming. The European Union banned all CFC (e.g. R12, R502) from use after 1994. The use of HCFCs (e.g., R22) was banned from use in new equipment from 2000, followed by a ban on use of virgin HCFCs for any purpose after 1st January 2010. Furthermore it will not be permissible to use any R22, even for service work from 2015 onwards. The vast majority of water chillers manufactured prior to 2000 used R22 as a refrigerant, so from 2015 onwards the systems will become unserviceable as it will be illegal to recharge with the refrigerant within the EU. This will be law under EU Directive 842/2006. The directive also requires any engineers working on a refrigeration system to be REFCOM approved meaning they have a City & Guilds certificate or similar. F&R Products Ltd are able to offer a solution to this problem; simply replace R22 with a drop-in refrigerant for a fraction of the cost of a new chiller. OK, there is a small price to pay in that these refrigerants are slightly less efficient but many water chillers are oversized duty-wise so there is often capacity to spare. F&R Products Ltd are Refcom approved and therefore able to service all makes and models of refrigerated water chillers. We offer annual service visits to ensure your compliance with EU Directive 842/2006 or a contract where we visit twice a year to maintain your refrigeration plant and give priority to your company in the event of a breakdown. If you have any doubts about your site’s compliance please call us on 01823 663 281.
