Are fast foods as healthy as the BIG BOYS say they are? Well I think we know that what the advertising and marketing people say and what REALLY goes into a “Big” Mac or a Dunkin donut, are very different things. I have to say I was pleased to read some while ago about McDonald’s phasing out the use of certain “critically important” antibiotics in its chicken products. However, McDonald’s chicken will now be given ionophores, an antibiotic which helps keep chickens healthy, but is not used by humans!? In addition to this great piece of news we also learn: “McDonald’s also said that US dairy products, such as low fat white milk and fat-free chocolate milk, would be derived from cows that have not been treated with rbST – an artificial growth hormone.” Not before time, rBST has not been allowed on the market in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Israel or the European Union since 2000! And this after constantly telling us for the last 20 years that we are, LOVING IT. Isn’t that nice of them? The downside of BIG marketing is, I think, that after so many years of young (and not so young) people being told that is this how REAL chicken, burger, and donuts, etc look and taste, they believe it! And why not when this is the only message that they get. Nothing personal here, even I eat the stuff sometimes (once in a bad year!) But now that their worldwide, like-for-like sales, are falling they are being pushed (not voluntary) towards producing more natural and less “processed junk food”. And it is not only US companies, the Swiss food giant Nestle also announced that it would be removing all artificial flavors and colors from its chocolate products in the US. For example “In CRUNCH, natural vanilla flavor will replace artificial vanillin.” Let us put our hands together in praise or applause and say,”WELL DONE” McDonalds, Dunkin, Krispy, Nestle, etc! Welcome to the club. Here at Donut Square we have been doing that from day one when we started “FRESH- HOT-TASTY-DONUTS”. It took us many months to develop our Long Life Donut Mix, but we arrived where we wanted to be – with a mix that is totally free of additives, preservatives, colorants, dry substitutes, improvers, stabilizers… If it does not exist in NATURE it won’t be in our donut mix. Simple as that. “We never compromise on taste” the BIG BOYS say. NEITHER DO WE. That is why we use REAL EGGS to prepare our donut batter. Yes real fresh eggs, in shells, from real chickens. It may sound a bit “strange” nowadays when almost everything is instant, and often comes out of a smartphone app. But believe me there is nothing better than whole natural eggs to make freshly cooked donuts. After all when buying and eating donuts, many of us are still trying to travel back to those golden days, when we were little children ourselves. At the fun fair or on the beach. I know it from myself – the donuts then tasted so yummy, but we never had enough money for more. Maybe that’s why. Or maybe, just maybe, because they did not put in them egg powder, colorants, stabilizers, improvers….
