Avian Influenza (otherwise known as Bird Flu or Fowl Plague) is a potentially devastating disease that can affect a wide variety of farmed and wild birds. Birds are susceptible to flu much the same as humans are, the most contagious strains of bird flu (that are often fatal to birds) are the H5 and H7 strains. The deadly H5N1 strain is the type currently causing concern, which has also proven to be deadly to humans. At the moment humans appear able to contract the disease through close contact with sick, dead or dying infected poultry – however this is rare! To date there have been no reports of the disease being passed from human to human, however it is a ‘worst case’ scenario that the disease could mutate to this stage and cause a pandemic.
