Hydrazine - Accurate detection & measurement when used for boiler feed water treatment using PID technology.

Hydrazine - N2H4 is a dangerous but useful inorganic chemical compound.

It is a colourless flammable liquid derived from the same industrial chemistry processes that is used to manufacture ammonia. It has an ammonia like odour but has physical properties more like that of water.

It is highly flammable and toxic and is used in numerous industrial applications from air bags to jet fuel and as an Oxygen Scavenger within the nuclear and coal/gas power applications.

The proper treatment of boiler feed water is an important part of the operation and maintenance an efficient boiler system.

As steam is produced, dissolved solids become concentrated and begin to form deposits inside a boiler leading to poor heat transfer and a reduction in efficiency.

Any dissolved gasses such as oxygen and carbon dioxide react with the metals in the boiler system and lead to boiler corrosion.

In order to protect the boiler from these contaminants, they are controlled or removed. The oxygen content is often reduced by the use of either Sodium Sulphite or Hydrazine as a scavenger agent.

Although PID instruments detection Hydrazine it has always been an unusable solution due to the low levels that are required to be measured plus the existence of interference compounds.

Additional ammonia is present within the feed water which will also be measured using a standard 10.6 eV lamp found in general purpose low accuracy instruments.

These problems are overcome with the latest high specification ppbRAE 3000 instrument manufactured by RAE Systems.

Using the low energy 9.8 eV lamp to remove any ammonia interference and the selection of Hydrazine from the chemical compound library provides a cost effective solution with low ppb resolutions.

The ppbRAE also has very low ongoing costs when compared to existing Hydrazine detection solutions.

The instrument uses 1/2" PID UV lamps and the construction allows for the simple and easy cleaning and swapping between the 3 lamp types as required making the instrument truly multipurpose.

The instrument shows the resolution available using the 10.6 eV lamp. With the 9.8 eV 50 ppb resolution is achieved.
