The full-time post of Engineering Manager will report directly to the Technical Director, and will be responsible for the application of Engineering principles to business practice. This role brings together the technological problem solving ability of Engineering, with the organizational, administrational and planning abilities of management to oversee complex enterprises from conception to completion. The role will include the day-to-day management of the development Engineering team. The main areas of focus will be as follows:- Strategy Working with the board to ensure alignment with the future strategic direction of the business based on the strengths of the current team, and inputting into the marketing strategy for products offering competitive differentiation. This will require a good knowledge of the team’s strengths and weaknesses, and early identification of ongoing skills development requirements and skills shortages. It will also require encouragement of the Engineering team to generate new product ideas, and input into an assessment gating process to ensure the most promising ideas are given sufficient support/focus. Resource Management Implement and maintain the skills/knowledge chart and corresponding succession plan for all direct reports. In addition, ensure that any necessary training of employees is identified, up to date, and that changes are effectively communicated. Assist in the development of job role specifications for all reports, and take responsibility for completing all direct reports appraisals. The Engineering Manager will also be responsible for the development, implementation and management of both apprenticeships and studentships in line with the future succession plan for the development team. Equipment Identify and rough cost the equipment required as part of the company investment strategy for future business growth, and/or to provide strategic advantage. Processes Develop, document and control standard development related processes such as design reviews, engineering change management, cost estimating, etc. Play a lead role in the process improvement strategy to reduce operational costs and drive up quality standards in the area of influence. Generate and maintain a set of design guidelines to influence the design of new product. Play a lead role in new product handover, working closely with the design and manufacturing teams in order to transfer new designs quickly into manufacture in the most cost-effective and timely manner. Metrics Implement and maintain the following (suggested) series of metrics to monitor performance and drive up quality through continuous improvement initiatives:- Project overdue reporting including reasons Variances against standard cost / time Scrap Rework This data is to be used to drive through continuous improvement activity in development project execution, and to assist in the development of more junior Engineering personnel to learn project lessons for future activity.t
