Storm Desmond – The Impact on Farming and Rainwater Harvesting
With hundreds of homes being evacuated around Cumbria and the Scottish borders, the farming community has rallied support for the victims, many pledging donations of forage and bedding. Forage Aid was established in the wake of the Somerset floods of 2013 and the organisation is currently taking offers on social media and through it’s Just Giving page here: https://www.justgiving.com/forage-aid/. Meanwhile, farming throughout the region has also been hit hard by the poor weather and the NFU have asked the government for urgent assistance as hundreds of members said that severe weather e vents were threatening UK food production Defra secretary, Liz Truss, has pledged to ensure that “all resources are made available”, according to Farming UK. On Saturday, the government mobilised a full national emergency response with 200 military personnel and supporting assets, including making available a Chinook helicopter. Over 50 high volume pumps were made ready and the Floods Minister, My Hon Friend, travelled to Cumbria on Saturday to ensure that the emergency responders on the ground had all they need. With some of the highest levels of rainfall ever recorded throughout the North of England, the opportunity to harvest large volumes of this free resource is obvious. Enduramaxx rainwater tanks collect roof run-off throughout the year, at times of heavy rainfall, and store water at optimum conditions for when it is needed most later in the year. More here!
