About Us

The Biomet UK Limited manufacturing facilities are based at Bridgend, South Wales and Swindon, Wilts and produce Orthopaedic implants for use in the UK and for export around the world.

The UK sites are part of the world-wide Biomet manufacturing structure which includes facilities in France, Germany, Spain and the USA.

Over 650 team members are employed in the UK. The Bridgend facility forms the UK headquarters and houses the Customer Care, Theatre Care and Shipping and other departments. Manufacture at Bridgend is concentrated on Trauma implants, Hip replacements and bespoke Instrumentation.

The Research and Development and Custom Product Departments are based at Swindon, with Knee replacements, Shoulders and Elbows, and implants which include UHMWPE being the main products manufactured here.

In order to guarantee the highest quality of all our implants, Biomet UK Limited keeps in-house as many processes as possible, so that total control over quality can be maintained. These include chambers to apply Plasma Spray Porous Coating and Hydroxyapatite Coating to implants and specialist systems to produce directly compression moulded UHMWPE components.

Biomet UK Limited employs the latest manufacturing technologies to ensure that all products are of the highest possible quality and surpass the exacting standards demanded by surgeons and patients. These techniques include computer controlled production involving CNC machines, robotics, Five-axis grinding, wire erosion and electrochemical machining.

Our history In November 1977, Biomet Inc. was formed by four young entrepreneurs with a clear vision for a unique, service-oriented orthopaedic company. The ultimate goal was to provide orthopaedic surgeons and their patients with the highest quality and most clinically proven products in the marketplace. To do so, they focused on providing an unparalleled level of service by conistently responding to the needs of their customers.

In May 1984, the company augmented its international presence with the acquisition of Orthopaedic Equipment Company (OEC), which expanded Biomet's manufacturing operations into Europe, bolstered its distribution network, and provided the Company with a broad line of internal fixation devices and operating room supplies.

In January 1988, Biomet acquired Electro-Biology, Inc. (EBI), a pioneer and market leader in both the electrical stimulation and external fixation segments in the USA.

In July 1992, Biomet ventured into the craniomaxillofacial market with the purchase of Walter Lorenz Surgical, Inc., a market leader.

In November 1994, Biomet acquired Kirschner Medical Corporation, which provided the Company with complementary product offerings in the reconstructive and softgoods market.

Biomet and Merck KGaA formed a Joint Venture in January 1998, known in Europe as Biomet Merck. Merck KGaA is a chemical, pharmaceutical and laboratory company located in Darmstadt, Germany. The Joint Venture offered additional opportunities for Biomet in Europe, with Biomet benefiting from exclusive rights to Merck’s strong portfolio of biomaterials products, including bone cements. In 2004 Biomet announced that it would acquire the Biomaterials Division of Merck KgaA, incorporating it fully into the Biomet family of companies. As a result, the name of the European entity changed from Biomet Merck to Biomet Europe.

The December 1999 acquisition of Implant Innovations, Inc. (“3i”), located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, enabled to compete in the dental reconstructive implant market. Biomet and 3i are working together to cooperatively develop new products and technologies such as bone substitute materials and autologous growth factors.

In addition to the acquisition of Merck Biomaterials in 2004, Biomet also acquired Interpore International, Inc. This acquisition further strengthens Biomet product offerings in the areas of Spinal Implants, Orthobiologic products and Minimally Invasive Surgery.
